On this day in 1971, the Spartans played their first varsity football game against Christiana High School. Bill Howell became the first player to score in the program's history on an 83-yard run. His tally would provide the only points for the Spartans who fell 18 - 6. The contest was held at Christiana, with local Newark radio station WNRK doing the broadcast. Former Saint Mark's baseball head coach and current Alumni Ambassador Tom Lemon was a member of the squad.
On this day in 1992, Vinnie Scott made his Spartan coaching debut against Concord High School. Saint Mark's defeated the Raiders 14 - 6 at Baynard Stadium. Josh Kasper scored both touchdowns for the Spartans and had a late-game interception to thwart a Concord comeback. Scott would go on to coach Saint Mark's for 13 years winning 83 games and making three state finals appearances.
Twenty years ago today one of the best teams to wear the Green & Gold opened their season with a 40 - 0 victory over McKean at Randy White Alumni Field. The #1 ranked Spartans put the game away early with 34 first half points and gained 352 yards total offense. Current Saint Mark's football coaches Joe Wright, Jon Heydt, and Matt Backer were members of that squad. Wright passed for 221 yards and three touchdowns. Including a 56 yard toss to Heydt, who also scored twice on the ground.
